Writing an elevator pitch Template

To write an effective and successful elevator speech for professional purposes, think about answering who you are, what you do, what qualifications and interests you have, your career goals and strengths, as much as your potential contributions to the roles that interest you.  And yes, you need to do this in less than 30 seconds! 

The task might seem hard to accomplish, but we’ll make it easier to achieve with the upcoming step-by-step sample elevator pitches. 

How to start an elevator pitch

Certainly, begin by introducing yourself. If the person listening doesn’t already know your name, make it clear by stating your first and last name. 

If your audience already knows who you are, move on to your professional background, starting with your qualifying degrees. 

First Example: your introduction

“Hi! My name is John Evans. As an MBA graduate from the University of Chicago, I have focused on product launches in the last 5 years working for Meyer and Sons.”

This example should make it clear how your name can follow your academic and professional credentials in a couple of very simple lines. 

Remember to add first and last names if unknown. State the title and college for your most relevant degrees. Follow that with your area of expertise and add your professional background. While that might sound like a lot to fit in, see how easy it can be to fit it all in a few short sentences. Let’s move on to see another sample of the same.

“Hello! I’m Mark Stevens, executive assistant to Michael’s Corp. For the past three years, I’ve exercised my UCLA EMBA graduate degree in analytic project research under the company’s Admin Director.”

These are succinct ways of fitting all your introductory information in two simple lines. Toss and turn your credentials around a bit until you come up with the perfect combination to give your intro the most value.

Summarize what you’ve done

For a successful elevator pitch, you want to give a summary of your major accomplishments in relation to the position or opportunity in which you’re interested. That includes giving a recap of your background by focusing on your major successes. 

Your skills and strengths need to be a key area to the recap we mention above. So don’t be shy about what you share. Without overdoing it, be selective and on point about your career’s highlights. 

If you need help in selecting what you include, create lists of your trajectory. Jot down everything that comes to mind in regards to your background.  Then cross off whatever doesn’t sound relevant to your current interest. Let’s add to a previous example to illustrate this point.

Second example: your background

“Hi! My name is John Evans. As an MBA graduate from the University of Chicago, I have focused on product launches in the last 5 years working for Meyer and Sons. With broad expertise in Artificial Intelligence, I have specialized in application integration in medical devices, providing a new area of market insertion for the business.”

We hope that clarifies a bit how this works, but, just in case, let’s look at another case scenario.

“Hello! I’m Jane Edwards, a software developer with an honor’s degree from the University of Washington. I’ve been devoted exclusively to the development of web applications for diverse transnational customers at a global scale throughout the last decade. Through agile solutions in front-end UX engineering, I’ve focused on successful scaling as part of major business growth.” 

See how both case scenarios focus on factual action and their resulting products for the benefit of their employers or businesses? This is how you can successfully shape your background by mentioning your successes.

The latest sample elevator pitch is a peculiar one because of the words that were used to describe the person’s experience. Typically, you wouldn’t include high-sounding words to describe what you’ve done. Of course, in the niche at hand, agile is relevant and exact to the work that was delivered. And successful scaling is just anyone’s pride. 

However, try to otherwise remove any fancy words or clichés from your background descriptions. Your actions should truly be louder than your words, so focus on description rather than enhancing your speech through extravagant adjectives.

Explain what you bring to the table

Don’t forget to include how you envision being of positive reinforcement to the job that you wish to get. We have done so for you below. 

Third example: what you have to give

“Hi! Thanks for giving me room to be here today. My name is Ronald Evans and I’m a graduate statistician from the University of Illinois. Having focused on experiment design for data collection agencies over the last 12 years, I’ve worked mostly on public safety issues through Status Public Research Labs. As a potential Senior Client Solutions Statistician, I bring a solid background and assurance in the handling of public data statistics for accurate analysis and interpretation.”

Now you can see how things start adding up. Little by little, word by word, your elevator pitch starts creating itself in relevant ways. Let’s see what comes next. 

State what you want

See this as a call to action, if that helps. It’s okay to also see this as literally asking for that which moves your passions, as well.

Fourth example: Ask for what you want

This last part of your elevator pitch is quite simple. Ask for that which has moved you to deliver your pitch in the first place. 

Take any of the examples above and add the following to it in a single line, for instance:

“I would appreciate knowing what open positions you have that could be a perfect match to my outlined background.”

Or you could even come up with a precise question if you feel the occasion allows for it. Following one of the examples above, we could ask the following query:

“Would you please outline for me what your latest research has thrown on the subject of AI in the medical field recently?”
